Asphalt friction testing at Breedon Gilfach Quarry

Roads

As leading academics undertaking research on road surface materials and characteristics we specialise in non-standard testing and consultancy.

Who:

R3 recently conducted a comprehensive friction survey at the entrance of Breedon Gilfach Quarry, Neath, Wales. This survey aimed to assess the performance of two newly laid asphalt surfaces – a 6mm Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) and a 10mm SMA. Breedon initiated this material trial as part of their commitment to enhancing road infrastructure.

What was the challenge?

The survey employed the Grip Tester, a continuous-reading braked-wheel fixed-slip trailer unit designed to measure the friction coefficient or Grip Number (GN). To ensure precision and reliability, the testing process consistently maintained a 0.25mm water film thickness, facilitated by the Automatic Watering System.

What was the solution?

R3 utilised the GripTester with an “A” series-measuring tire for the survey. As per Breedon’s instructions, the GripTester was towed down the quarry entrance road, focusing on specific test sections of the asphalt. The Breedon proprietary 6mm SMA and 10mm SMA, designed for use on the Wales Trunk Road Network, underwent three runs in both directions.

Three runs, in the same direction were completed. The data from each run was compared with the others to ensure that the GripTester was reading consistently. An average was taken from the runs to ensure that the material undertest is within the skid resistance thresholds as outlined in the specification.

Conculsion

The friction survey conducted by R3 at Breedon Gilfach Quarry provides valuable insights into the performance of the 6mm and 10mm SMAs on the road surfaces. These findings not only contribute to Breedon’s ongoing material trial but also offer critical data for optimising road safety and infrastructure design. The consistent and meticulous testing approach ensures that the results are reliable, paving the way for informed decision-making in road construction and maintenance.
