Clackmannanshire Road Safety Enhancement
Roads
As leading academics undertaking research on road surface materials and characteristics we specialise in non-standard testing and consultancy.
Introduction:
In support of Clackmannanshire Council’s efforts to meet Scotland’s 2030 road casualty reduction targets, R3 was engaged to conduct crucial road safety surveys. These surveys were part of a broader initiative to implement the Safe System approach across the Council’s road network, aiming to reduce accidents and improve overall road safety.
What was the challenge?
What was the solution?
R3 carried out LiDAR and friction testing surveys across Clackmannanshire’s road networks. The LiDAR surveys helped identify critical hazards such as sharp bends, changes in elevation, and potential roadside obstacles that could increase the risk of accidents. To complement the LiDAR data, R3 performed friction testing to measure the grip levels of the road surfaces. This assessment was particularly important for identifying areas where the likelihood of vehicles skidding was higher, especially in adverse weather conditions. These surveys equipped Clackmannanshire Council with precise, actionable data, enabling them to prioritise road safety interventions such as road reengineering, adjusting speed limits, and installing safety barriers in the most critical areas.
Conculsion
R3’s LiDAR and friction testing surveys were instrumental in helping Clackmannanshire Council advance its road safety objectives. By providing detailed and accurate data, R3 enabled the Council to adopt a targeted, data-driven approach to road safety, ensuring that interventions were both effective and resource-efficient. This project represents a significant step forward in Clackmannanshire’s commitment to reducing road casualties and creating safer roads in line with Scotland’s 2030 targets.
What the client said:
